Early morning fire leaves west-end home destroyed (5 photos)

Neighbours say a family of three escaped the dwelling unharmed

A house in the 700 block of Shafer Ave. is facing severe structural damage after a fire broke out early Saturday morning.

Witnesses say fire crews were on scene for some time battling large flames and heavy smoke.

Several neighbours told SooToday a family of three were inside the home when the fire started, but they all escaped safely.

“The smoke alarms saved their lives,” one neighbour said.

“Everything inside is destroyed,” another resident added.

From street side, the structure’s left wall appeared to have faced the most damage, while the roof and windows were all left with post-burn markings.

The cause of the fire is not known at this time.

We will update this story when more information becomes available.
