Drinking and driving complaint leads police to drugs

ELLIOT LAKE - On April 9, 2016, the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a complaint of a male that had been consuming alcohol throughout the day and was driving. 

Police were given descriptors of the vehicle and began to patrol for the vehicle in the City of Elliot Lake. 

At 10:55 p.m., police observed a vehicle matching the description on Roman Avenue and initiated a traffic stop.

The officer detected an odour of alcoholic beverage emanating from the driver’s breath and the driver was arrested.

Dwayne Newton, 47 years age, from Elliot Lake, Ontario, was charged with:

  • Driving with More than 80 milligrams of Alcohol in Blood, contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal of Code;
  • Possessing of Schedule I Substance- Methylenedioxyamphetamine (Ecstasy), contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act;
  • Possessing of schedule I Substance- Cocaine, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act; and
  • Fail to Comply with Conditions of Undertaking, contrary to section 145(5.1) of the Criminal Code.

The accused is schedule to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on May 3, 2016.
