UPDATE: JULY 23, 9 a.m.

A PUC spokesperson contacted SooToday to report that Thursday's water outage has been cancelled and "will be rescheduled for a later date."

ORIGINAL STORY:

The ongoing resurfacing work on Queen Street will result in two downtown water outages this week.

AECOM, the engineering consultant overseeing the work, advises that the first outage is planned for Tuesday to finish replacing a hydrant near the CIBC bank.

"This outage will impact the businesses/residences located between Spring and Brock,” AECOM said in an update released Monday.

"The second outage is planned for Thursday, July 25 to complete hydrant replacement just east of the Brock intersection (near old RBC bank). This outage will impact the businesses/residences located between Brock and East.”

General contractor Avery Construction Ltd. expects to continue installing a new concrete sidewalk between March and Spring and then Spring to Brock this week.

That work will necessitate rerouting a temporary walkway to finish the concrete pours.

"Access will be maintained to the local businesses from temporary walkway via temporary platforms and other pedestrians walking through will be directed to the south side of Queen. Once completed, pedestrians will be diverted to new concrete sidewalk," AECOM said.

"During the construction process, Queen Street will be reduced to a single lane of traffic and one parking lane while the contractor works on half of Queen Street at a time. One lane is now closed between March and Brock Street on north side."

Here, as described by AECOM, is what got done last week:

March to Spring (north side)

  • worked on electrical handholes and ducts for new street lighting
  • completed grading for sidewalk and boulevard
  • installed formwork for new sidewalk in preparation for concrete pour
  • relocated temporary walkway and installed temporary platforms to access businesses

Spring to Brock (north side)

  • completed catch basin, storm leads and drains
  • worked on grading for sidewalk and boulevard
  • excavated for new hydrant just east of Brock

"The work on Queen Street between Elgin Street and Brock Street commenced from March Street and will continue towards Brock Street along the north side before diverting to south side," AECOM said.

"The work between March and Elgin is scheduled to commence mid August with closure of Queen scheduled to commence as of August 26 for six weeks.

"The work is scheduled to be substantially completed late this fall with some work extending into 2025 depending upon on the final project limits."
