Local students will have a chance to get some yummy for the tummy thanks to a donation this week.

On Oct. 29, a cheque for $16,000 was given to the Algoma District School Board's (ADSB) student nutrition programs from the United Steelworkers Local 2251.

The board's director of education, Lucia Reece, and chair Jennifer Sarlo accepted the money from Mike Da Prat, president of USW Local 2251, and assistant Debbie Logan.

To date, USW Local 2251 has donated $117,000 (which includes this year’s donation) to the school's student nutrition and breakfast programs, says a news release.

"Food programs offer school-age children and youth nutritious options, typically at breakfast and/or as snacks at different times during the day," says the release.

The donation will help buy fresh fruit, milk, yogurt, cereals and other healthy options that are much needed by some students who arrive at school without breakfast or snacks for the day.

"Studies have shown that children whose nutritional needs are met have fewer attendance and discipline problems, and their ability to learn is enhanced," says the release.

Reece and Sarlo thanked Da Prat and Logan and the USW on behalf of the board and reiterated "that the donation will have a positive impact on a very present need in schools throughout the district."
