The first thing to know about Record Store Day is that to get the really good stuff, you need to be there early.
Early, as in when the store opens.
When The Rad Zone opened its doors at 10 a.m. today in Wellington Square Mall, about 40 customers were lined up for the popular annual event, according to manager Melodie Taylor.
Record Store Day is held one Saturday every April to celebrate independently owned record retailers.
Limited-edition vinyl is pressed specially for the event and the recordings are coveted collector's items, sometimes offered within hours at inflated prices on websites like Kijiji.
At The Rad Zone, Taylor says Record Store Day is one of the store's biggest days of the year, equalled only by the desperation buying that occurs in the final hours before Christmas.
Staffer Dylan Turner had his eye on a live recording of Santana at Woodstock on August 16, 1969, hoping to pick it up at the end of his shift.
All records and music-related books, videos, shirts and other merch are on sale until 5 p.m. at The Rad Zone.
