Mario Turco has been reappointed as chancellor of Algoma University.

The local post-secondary institution announced Turco's reappointment this morning.

Turco will serve a second voluntary four-year term, which took effect on Sept. 1.

"The chancellor is the titular head of the university who confers all Senate certificates and degrees at convocation ceremonies," a news release says. "Alongside the president, and the chair and vice-chair of the Board of Governors, the chancellor represents the university to the external community. As an advocate for the vision of the university, the Chancellor is an ambassador locally, provincially and beyond."

“When I came to Canada, I could not speak english and was years older than the students in my first classes," Turco said. "The public education system was critical to my success as it is built on the foundation of equity of access and high-quality education for all students. I am grateful for our JK-12, college and university education system and attribute much of the success in my life and that of our three children to it."

“I am deeply honoured to continue serving as Chancellor of Algoma University,” Turco also said. “This institution holds a special place in my heart, and I am committed to furthering its mission of providing accessible and inclusive education to all. The future of our University looks very promising. The work being done by our visionary and transformative president, the highly committed senior leadership supported by very qualified and engaged staff and faculty, involved communities, and Indigenous partners means the University is well positioned to prepare the graduates of tomorrow. I’m thrilled and grateful that this reappointment will allow me to continue to be a small part of this exciting journey.”

Turco’s 42-year career includes nine years as director of education for the Algoma District School Board (ADSB).

"He is highly regarded for his experience, interpersonal skills, knowledge, and strategic thinking, having worked extensively with government, school boards, and organizations across the province and country," the news release says.

Algoma Board of Governors chair Kelli-Ann Lemieux called Turco "a cornerstone of Algoma University’s success."

"His passion for education and community engagement has inspired us all," Lemieux also said. "His vision for the future aligns perfectly with our goals, and we are excited to continue working together to elevate Algoma University to new heights.”
