McGuinty government investing in tomorrow’s highly skilled workforce

SAULT STE, MARIE - The McGuinty government is providing $616,595 to Sault College and Algoma University to support the local schools in continuing to deliver a high-quality education while providing their students with better facilities and greater resources, David Orazietti MPP announced today.

“Our government recognizes that Ontario’s highly skilled workforce is the key to the province’s future success in a knowledge-based economy,” said Orazietti. “This funding will help ensure that our local post-secondary students have access to the modern technology and academic resources they need to become the future drivers of Sault Ste. Marie’s economy.”

Today’s announcement for post-secondary funding in Sault Ste. Marie includes:

- $424,637 for Sault College

- $191,958 for Algoma University.

Today’s announcement is part of a province-wide investment of $150 million to colleges and universities in response to higher-than-expected enrolment and to provide students with safe, modern and more accessible learning environments.

Every university and college in Ontario has received a portion of $150 million in immediate one-time support.

“Today’s students are tomorrow’s work force. Investing in their skills and knowledge means Ontarians are prepared for an innovation economy,” said Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities John Milloy.

To help more Ontarians get the knowledge, skills and training they need to succeed, the McGuinty government introduced Reaching Higher, an historic, $6.2-billion investment in post-secondary education.

With these investments, operating grants to universities and colleges have increased by $1.7 billion, or about 63 per cent, since 2002-03.
