UPDATE: Wawa motorcyclist killed in Highway 17 crash north of Sault

UPDATE NO. 2:

 

Highway 17 and Highway 552 are now open in two directions as of about 7 p.m., according to Sault Ste. Marie OPP.

The investigation into this incident continues.

UPDATE:

A 68-year-old motorcyclist from Wawa was pronounced deceased at the scene of a collision on Highway 17 north of the Sault earlier today.

Shortly after 11:30 a.m., members from the Sault Ste Marie OPP, the Goulais River Fire Department and Sault Ste. Marie Paramedic Services responded to a collision involving a motorcycle and pickup truck at the intersection of Highway 17 and Highway 552 West in Fenwick Township. 

Police said the investigation is ongoing with collision reconstructionists at the scene. The highway remained closed in both directions as of around 4 p.m.

The Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario - Ontario Forensic Pathology Service is assisting. A post-mortem examination will take place at a later date, police said. 

EARLIER REPORT:

Highway 17 is closed north of the city due to a collision.

All lanes are closed in the Goulais River area, according to the province's traffic information service Ontario 511.

The collision is between the turn-off to Island Lake (Highway 556, Heyden) area and Highway 552.

The closure was initiated at 11:55 a.m.

No further details on vehicles involved or possible injuries was available at this time.
