COVID-19: Here's the situation in the Sault today

On Thursday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau used his daily update to reiterate the new quarantine measures - namely, a mandatory 14-day self-isolation period for travellers returning to Canada - that allow the federal government to fine or arrest Canadians who refuse to go into self-isolation after returning to the country. 

Canada is also attempting to discourage the Unites States from using American soldiers to intercept illegal migrants who could spread the COVID-19 virus. 

In local news, Algoma Public Health released its latest COVID-19 numbers Thursday morning:

  • 224 tested
  • 1 positive
  • 105 negative
  • 118 pending

Meanwhile, Algoma Steel Inc. is reminding its workers that it's taking a series of precautions after an employee of a supplier tested positive for COVID-19, prompting concerns from United Steelworkers Local 2251 President Mike Da Prat.  

On Wednesday evening, SooToday spoke with Dr. Marlene Spruyt, medical officer of health and CEO of Algoma Public Health, who is concerned that travellers returning to the Sault and the Algoma District from abroad aren't adhering to the 14-day self-isolation period

In provincial news, the Ontario government announced Thursday that it's providing an additional $3.3-billion for frontline workers, while formulating a "made-in-Ontario" solution for necessary medical supplies going forward. 

Ontario Premier Doug Ford also said that the government will fight businesses and residents that are price-gouging consumers during the ongoing pandemic. 

Ontario confirmed another 170 positive cases of COVID-19 Thursday, which accounts for the largest single-day increase in positive cases to date. 

Of the 38,550 people approved for COVID-19 testing in Ontario, 26,727 patients have tested negative for the virus as of Thursday morning.

Another 10,965 cases are under investigation. 

Eight cases have been resolved. 

COVID-19 has now claimed the lives of 13 people in Ontario. 

Numbers provided Thursday morning indicate that Ontario has now had 858 positive cases of COVID-19 in the province.
