In the fall of 2007, Huron-Superior District Catholic School Board trustees made news near and far by refusing to allow the administration of provincially ordered doses of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in its schools.

The vaccine offers protection from sexually transmitted genital HPV infection.

But after a year of often-heated controversy, the board reversed itself in a five-to-four vote.

The November 2008 flip-flop opened the way for Grade 8 girls attending Huron-Superior schools to get HPV/ Gardasil vaccinations - with parental approval - beginning in the 2008-09 school year.

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine issued the following media advisory today:

************************* NOSM symposium

Prophylactic HPV vaccines: The future is now

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) will feature Dr. Alex Ferenczy at an upcoming symposium.

The symposium, entitled “Prophylactic HPV Vaccines: The Future is Now,” will review topics critical to the current understanding of genital HPV infection in Canada.

These are:

1. Medical, financial, psychological implications of cervical cancer, its precursors and genital warts

2. The arguments for and against the implementation of publically funded prophylactic HPV vaccination in light of scientific, peer-reviewed published data on the recently approved quadrivalent HPV vaccine

3. The role and methods of cervical cancer screening in the post-vaccination era; and

4. The importance for advocacy for promoting maximum population coverage to be vaccinated.

Please plan to attend this symposium.
