The Community Wellness Bus is a collaborative initiative that addresses the pressing healthcare needs of individuals facing homelessness, drug addiction and mental health challenges in our community.

Launched in 2021, this project has become a lifeline for over 11,000 people across 10 sites in our community.

Operating four days a week, the repurposed ambulance delivers essential services directly to those who need them most, offering food, hygiene products, harm reduction supplies and medical care to individuals who might not otherwise access help.

Led by CMHA Algoma and Sault Area Hospital (SAH), in partnership with the Group Health Centre, Algoma Family Services, Social Services and the Superior Family Health Team, the Community Wellness Bus demonstrates the power of community collaboration.

With a dedicated team of professionals and peer support workers (many with lived experience) the bus offers nonjudgmental, empathetic care.

Canadian Mental Health Association of Algoma supervisor Rose Genua- Brennan shared, "Everyone needs and deserves to have someone there for them. If we can reach people where they are, offer them a little something and they return feeling that someone cares and is listening, then it’s all worth it."

The initiative not only provides immediate support but also fosters long-term connections with the healthcare system, reducing barriers and creating pathways to recovery and stability.

"As a whole, we are not only proud to provide this service to our community, but also of our staff who go out every day, rain or shine, to ensure the bus is running and services are provided," shared Genua-Brennan.

The impact of the Community Wellness Bus is a testament to the power of innovative solutions and community partnerships.

"We feel appreciated by our community for recognizing the efforts we make to support those members who are experiencing disadvantages," she added.

With continued support, this initiative has the potential to further expand its reach, ensuring that every individual in need can access the care and services they deserve.

"We hope to one day expand our services, offer more options for people and be able to provide even more support," expressed Genua-Brennan.

The Health Care Award is presented to an individual or group that has had an important impact on the health care of the community.

Congratulations to the team at the Community Wellness Bus!

This award is proudly sponsored by Sault College.
