Community Builders Awards: Emily Cormier recognized as champion of environmental sustainability

This year’s Environment Award winner has made significant efforts to increase Sault Ste. Marie’s climate action throughout her career

Emily Cormier is a city employee who has worked tirelessly over the last four years to increase Sault Ste. Marie’s sustainability efforts.

She has gone above and beyond in her role as Sustainability Lead to initiative long-lasting, positive change in our community.

Emily has worked on a wide-range of environmental projects locally, including efforts to increase the development and use of renewable energy, low-carbon vehicles and green buildings.

She has sat on task forces that unite critical stakeholders for environmental protection, worked on projects that protect forests, local waterways and biodiversity, integrated the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into the city’s community development process and built strong partnerships locally, nationally and internationally to advance the Sault’s sustainability goals.

Beyond her work directly with the city, Emily’s work with the non-profit sector has helped alleviate the pressure of limited resources and local constraints for environmental organizations and supported a number of community engagement events and initiatives that encourage residents to get outdoors and celebrate protecting our biodiversity.

Emily’s enthusiasm and passion for environmental sustainability has created results. She’s engaged with local students, youths, non-profits, post-secondary institutions, health, commercial, Indigenous and national organizations to teach and lead environmental sustainability in our community,

In 2020, she wrote and developed the city’s first community greenhouse gas emission Inventory and reduction plan. The city now has a greenhouse gas reduction target of net zero emissions by 2050, on which Emily will continue to work heavily on.

Emily believes in building a better world by using business as a tool for positive environmental change.

The Environment Award goes to a person or group that has had an important positive impact on our environment, both man-made and natural.
