Marty Turco back in the Sault for 2013 TELUS Cup celebration

SAULT STE. MARIE - If you haven’t considered catching the 2013 TELUS Cup action at the Essar Centre, then Thursday’s game between the Sault Ste. Marie North Stars and the Saskatoon Contacts will be one to see.

2013 TELUS Cup Tournament ambassador Marty Turco will be on hand on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. to help honour the 1993 team that the former NHL goaltender helped take to a bronze medal win.

Marty Turco is very familiar to the championship.

Playing in the 1993 tournament, which was then called the Air Canada Cup held in Kitchener, Ontario.

In addition to Turco on the 1993 Sault Ste. Marie Legion team, Brendan Yarema, a center for the team, went on to play in the American Hockey League for the St. Johns Maple Leafs (now the Toronto Marlies) and in the European Hockey League.

Turco later played NHL hockey with the Dallas Stars, Chicago Blackhawks before retiring in 2012 with the Boston Bruins.

Turco returns to the Canadian tournament, and his hometown of Sault Ste. Marie to bring the excitement of national midget hockey to back to Northern Ontario.

The tournament was previously hosted in Sault Ste. Marie in 2003, at the Sault Memorial Gardens.

“Marty has fond memories from his National Midget Championship experience,” said 2013 TELUS Cup Tournament Coordinator Mike Murphy. “We’re excited to have him on board as ambassador for the 2013 TELUS Cup, to help build excitement in the city for the tournament.”

The TELUS Cup has been drawing impressive crowds all week long and will continue to offer tickets at $10 for single games, or $56 for remaining tournament passes.

Also at the tournament is the Hockey Hall of Fame exhibition, set up on the event level in the Angelo Bumbacco room.

About the 2013 Telus Cup

The Telus Cup is the Canadian national midget hockey championships.

The 2013 Telus Cup will run from now until Sunday, April 28 at the Essar Centre in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

The Telus Cup is presented by Hockey Canada, and hosted by the local AAA contenders, the Sault Ste. Marie North Stars.
