College's unique new program will teach you how to fly a drone

Program consists of four steps to get your drone career off the ground

Have you considered what it would be like to have a career with drones? Sault College, in partnership with TerreSky and Clarion, is offering a unique course Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) to introduce you to your career working with drones! As an extra incentive TerreSky – a Sault Ste. Marie based company – is offering a guaranteed interview once you have successfully completed all steps of the course! 

This course includes four steps to get your drone career off the ground:

  • Step 1: complete the Ground School Course – an online test preparation course with registration available at any time. Participants have six months from the time they enrol to complete the course. Register today by calling 705.759.6700 option 3. *cost $343.06 and you must successfully achieve 80 per cent to pass
  • Step 2: Advanced Transport Canada Exam to be completed with Transport Canada. *Note there is a fee for this testing paid directly to Transport Canada
  • Step 3: Mission Planning – this one day workshop will teach you about flying in a controlled airspace including topics on navigation and map planning. *Cost is $499
  • Step 4: Flight review – a mandatory in-person flight review as required by Transport Canada for any individual flying on or near controlled airspace. *Cost is $499

“We are very excited to be offering this new and unique course at Sault College,” said Lori Crosson, Director, E-Learning and Continuing Education, Sault College. “Together with our partners TerreSky and Clarion, we’ve developed a course that sets participants up for success. And as an added incentive, all participants who successfully complete all four steps will be guaranteed an interview with TerreSky. This is such an amazing opportunity to learn about this new and emerging field and get a good foundation for a great career,” she added.

“Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems training continues to be a growing sector of the economy and offers tremendous potential to specialize in areas such as: flight operations, data analytics and maintenance support.  In recognizing these opportunities, we are very pleased to have developed a partnership with TerreSky and Clarion to offer this training for the first time at Sault College. Additionally, to enhance student learning we have invested in faculty training and drone equipment for use in various program areas,” said David Orazietti, Dean of Aviation, Business, Trades and Technology and Natural Environment, Sault College.

One of the collaborators and developers of the online curriculum for this program is Clarion. “The online program is the first step for individuals who wish to pursue a career in drones,” said Bruce McPherson, Clarion. “Our program has been successfully running for 20 years with a success rate of 97 percent. We look forward to having Sault College partner with us on our programming,” he added.

For our partner TerreSky, this exciting program will offer many amazing opportunities. “TerreSky is proud to be launching a one-of-a-kind project in Sault Ste. Marie next summer and we will be actively recruiting in February for individuals who can lead this innovative research project. The project will offer many opportunities for the selected RPAS pilots using some of the most cutting edge technologies in the industry. This project will have a focus on Climate Action and air space regulations. We’re excited to partner with Sault College and Clarion to offer participants an opportunity to succeed in this exciting industry,” said Ryan Rizzo, CEO TerreSky Inc.
