The City of Sault Ste. Marie continues to address the impacts of a significant weather event, with over one metre of snow accumulating in less than a week.

This unprecedented snowfall has posed challenges for road and sidewalk maintenance, the city said in a news release. Below are updates regarding municipal services and operations for Sunday, Dec. 1:

  • Garbage and Recycling: All residents' garbage and recycling collection will be delayed by one day this week. To aid in snow removal efforts, tonight and tomorrow, do not place garbage or recycling carts at the curb overnight before collection day.
  • Roads: Public Works crews are working around the clock to manage snow clearing. All available staff and equipment are deployed to ensure the safety and accessibility of City streets. Roads are passable, though some have reduced lane widths and above-normal snowpack depth. Clearing bus stops and laneways is the next priority.
  • Sidewalks: Due to the extent of snow, several sidewalks are not cleared, and additional time and resources are required to clear them. Work will continue throughout the week.
  • Transit: Sault Transit and Parabus services could experience delays, and unplowed parking lots could impact Parabus accessibility. Residents using transit are encouraged to remain patient.

The City thanks residents for their understanding and cooperation during this challenging time. Please exercise caution when travelling given the exceptional winter conditions.
