Prompted by a comment on a weather story, SooToday asked the City of Sault Ste. Marie what happened to the city loaders that used to follow graders and plows to scoop out driveways that were filled with ice.
Dan Perri, director of public works, said his department is responsible for maintaining 1,225 lane km of roadways, approximately 210 km of sidewalks, roughly 500 bus stops, and some laneways.
Perri said the city is using all of its staff and equipment in response to the snow.
“During each winter event, the roadways are prioritized, with highways and main roads sometimes getting multiple passes.
“We understand there is more accumulation than typical, however the city does not remove windrows at the end of private driveways,” he said.
