The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation made a third quarter payment totalling $495,214 to the City of Sault Ste. Marie for hosting Gateway Casinos Sault Ste. Marie for the period from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, 2024.
So far, during OLG’s fiscal year, which runs from April 1 to March 31, Sault Ste. Marie has received $1,342,672, a news release said.
Since the gaming site opened in May 1999, Sault Ste. Marie has received $36,629,290.
These payments to host communities are based on a formula applied across all gaming sites in Ontario with a graduated scale of gaming revenue at the hosted site.
“OLG’s Municipality Contribution Agreement with Sault Ste. Marie helps build critical infrastructure and fund important programs that make a real difference for residents,” said Ross Romano, member of Provincial Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie.
“Gateway Casinos Sault Ste. Marie supports numerous local jobs and generates substantial economic activity, that, in turn, improves the overall well-being of the Soo.”
A representative from the City of Sault Ste. Marie confirmed the funds are reinvested in the community, "supporting asset management projects for municipal facilities and alleviating the tax levy burden."
Since 1994, host communities have received more than $2.2 billion in non-tax gaming revenue.
OLG is proud to share proceeds of casino gaming with local communities, contributing to economic development including infrastructure and job creation. Payments to host communities are part of OLG’s commitment to Ontario, which includes reinvesting 100 per cent of OLG’s profits back into the province.
Over the past eight years, service providers have invested more than $2.5 billion in private sector capital investment across the province.
These investments have led to the development and opening of seven new casinos, one large scale resort development, numerous gaming floor expansions and new non-gaming amenities, the release said.
