Chamber issues anti-Prime Day message as annual Amazon sale approaches

'Amazon doesn't need your patronage' says the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce of the July 16-17 sale

Before you fill up your Amazon shopping cart with Prime Day discounts next week, think about local alternatives, urges the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce

"We encourage you to pause and consider the impact of your purchasing decisions. Supporting local businesses is often a superior experience and a responsible choice, driving our local economy," says Chamber President Derek Jackson in a news release.

The highly-promoted discounts for members of Amazon's paid subscription service happen July 16-17 this year (which, as you have probably noticed, is actually two days). The global online retailer started the promotion in 2015.

"Shopping with local small businesses increases the community’s wealth, tax revenue and standard of living. Owned by and employing our local friends and neighbours, these teams are often committed to staying local, raising their families here and in turn spending their money locally as well. Shopping local is an everybody win’s situation and one of the many ways to give where you live.”

The Chamber points to research that suggests at least some Prime Day 'deals' in the past have been based on inflated list prices. Amazon denies this is the case.

If you're looking for an Amazon alternative, the Chamber suggests checking out local retailers who offer their own deals during Amazon's sale, or looking to small sellers promoting their local businesses on social media. The local business group also suggests choosing online platforms that "support local artisans and eco-friendly products."

It says shopping local boosts the economy, creates a more vibrant local market and is better for the environment.
