Members of the public are invited to a Celebration of Life tomorrow for John Laford, a well-known Indigenous artist from Manitoulin Island.

Tomorrow marks the one-year anniversary of Laford’s sudden passing at the age of 67.

The Woodland artist is remembered as a gentle, spiritual, and talented individual who has paintings featured in many museums across Canada, the U.S., and Australia.

Locally, Laford had painted a four-panel mural for the new Agawa Canyon Tour Train station, and some of his other work can also be seen at the Roberta Bondar Place.

Residents are invited to attend his Celebration of Life from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Art Gallery of Algoma in Gallery #1.

Currently, Gallery #1 also houses Gathering in Honor/Maawnjiding wii-Gchi-inenjigeng, an exhibition of works created by Laford and his daughter Lucia.

Attendees are encouraged to provide food and bring a musical instrument if they’d like to play together with other visitors.

The Art Gallery will be providing coffee, tea, juice, and water.
