Sault College hosts its 40th Annual Scholarship, Bursary and Awards event

SAULT STE. MARIE - Sault College delivers an exceptional overall educational experience for students by creating a highly supportive environment.

One example of this is through the Student Financial Assistance office that provides students with options to help fund their educational costs.

Scholarships, bursaries and awards are three of the valuable resources available to students studying here.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Sault College’s Scholarship, Bursaries and Awards (SBA) event.

Held on Tuesday, March 19 at 7 p.m. at the Comfort Suites and Conference Centre, the event brings donors and students alike face-to-face in a celebration of thanks to the donors for their ongoing support and the students who benefit from their generosity.

More than 100 donors are expected to attend the event that distributes almost half a million dollars in awards to deserving students.

Earlier this year, many first-year students were recognized at the President’s Academic Excellence Scholarship evening for their high academic achievements.

The SBA event will honour an additional 250 top students in their programs.

One of those students, Jackson Gillon, an Aviation graduate, is the top award winner of the evening who will be presented with the Governor General’s Academic Medal Award.

Since 1873, Governor Generals of Canada have sponsored a medal to encourage and recognize excellent academics at various levels of the educational system.

It is awarded to the student graduating from the previous year’s three-year program who has achieved the highest academic standing in the College in the final year of his/her program.

“In the Sault College Student Financial Assistance department, awards are given to deserving students based on academic merit, personal attributes and unmet need. Annually, just over $2 million is distributed in scholarships, bursaries and awards,” states Terry Ableson, financial aid administrator and chair of the SBA program. “We continue to be inspired every year by the tremendous gesture that members of our community make to provide funds for students to receive a post-secondary education.”

Each year, the generosity of donors that support Sault College students continues to grow.

This year, several new awards will further benefit students including the Dr. Roberta Bondar Photography and Imaging Scholarship, the College Student Alliance Leadership Scholarship, the Eleanor Dalseg Memorial Scholarship, the Michael Joseph De Francesco Memorial Award, the Flakeboard Continuous Improvement Award, the Kirill Kokarev Memorial Award, the Natural Resources/Environmental Law Award, the Ian Nixon Memorial Award, the OPSEU Local 613 Memorial Award, the Prince Township Academic Excellence Award and the Dr. Sardar Sohi and Maria Sutton Rotary Scholarship.

“Our SBA night is a highlight of the academic year,” notes Leo Tiberi, vice-president academic, Sault College. “I extend congratulations to our award recipients and thanks to their families and friends who have supported them in their studies. Thank you as well goes to our generous donors for believing in the importance of a Sault College education. This support and recognition is encouragement for students to succeed in meeting their career goals.”

Sault College congratulates award recipients in striving for academic excellence while being dedicated to achieving their personal best, and to all those who support college students.
