The event will take place at Sault Theatre Workshop.

Experience an unforgettable evening or a special matinee of poetry, music, and community spirit as Sault Theatre Workshop presents Life on the Farm (Love of the Land)—a heartfelt performance celebrating the works of esteemed author, poet, and farmer Charlie Smith from Massey, Ont.

Attend on Feb. 6, 7, or 8 in the evening, or join Sault Theatre Workshop for a matinee on Feb. 9.

Organized by renowned local auctioneer Vernon Bailey, whose roots in farming fuel his storytelling, these events will bring selections from Smith’s acclaimed books, The Beast that God Has Kissed and Through Three Long Miles of Night, to life, a news release said.

These works will be performed alongside live musical accompaniment by John McClenaghan, creating a moving experience that honours rural life, resilience, and the beauty of the land.

A Legacy of Giving Back

John and Vernon first combined poetry and song in 2018, driven by a mission to support meaningful causes across Algoma. Their productions—Call of the Wild, Life on the Farm (Love of the Land), and From the Sublime to the Ridiculous—have engaged audiences more than 20 times across the North Channel, including on Manitoulin Island. Through these performances, they have raised over $40,000 for local charities, with 100 per cent of ticket sales directly benefiting local charities and non-profit organizations, thanks to the generosity of corporate sponsors.

Supporting Local Impact

Proceeds from this evening’s event will support two impactful organizations: the Zonta Club of Sault Ste. Marie and Area and Harvest Algoma. Representatives from both organizations will be in attendance to share their missions and engage with guests who wish to learn more about their vital contributions to the community.

"We would like to thank our sponsors for the upcoming Life on the Farm: Northshore Tractor, Tulloch Agriculture, Home Hardware, Peever Auctions, Northshore Sports and Auto, Penokean Hills Farms, and the Algoma Cattleman’s Association. Thanks to their generosity and the dedication of our audience members, these organizations continue to receive the support they need to thrive," the release said.

Past beneficiaries of these fundraising performances include ARCH Hospice, Northshore Health Network (serving Thessalon, St. Joseph Island, and Blind River), Rainbow Camp (with the support of Lillie Financial), Gore Bay Rotarians, and the Zonta Club.

The Team Behind the Performance

This event is made possible through the support of many individuals. Rob Rock, whose technical expertise and generosity have been integral to these productions since their inception, ensures an immersive experience through expert lighting and sound design. Additionally, the dedication of John’s wife, Bonnie, and Vernon’s wife, Tracey, plays a crucial role behind the scenes, ensuring every performance runs seamlessly.
