********************** Catherine Shunock - 2004 Medal of Merit

Catherine Shunock has for more than 30 years worked to assist the disadvantaged in Sault Ste. Marie, always in a low-key dedicated manner.

The following is a brief list of Catherine’s participation for the good of this community:

1970 – 1975 Co-Founder, Pied Piper Cooperative Nursery School

1972 for more than 20 years Member of the Sault Ste. Marie Association for the Mentally Retarded

1974 – 1986 Member, Board of Directors, Sault Ste. Marie Association for the Mentally Retarded

1974 – 1975 Chairperson, Salisbury Group Home Building Committee. This committee was responsible for overseeing program planning and implementation as well as construction of residences for 14 developmentally handicapped aduts.

1978 – 1983 Member, Algoma District Working Group – Committee was appointed by the Ministry of Community and Social Services to study needs for District of Algoma and recommend appropriate funding levels

1983 – 1984 Board of Directors, Sault Ste. Marie Day Care Services Cooperative Ltd.

1984 for more than 10 years Member of the Special Education Advisory Committee. Sault Ste. Marie Roman Catholic Separate School Board Committee responsible for making recommendations to the Board regarding the provision of programs for exceptional children.

1987 – 1989 Y.M.C.A. – member Board of Directors

1988 – 1991 Nova Group – Founder and Chairperson. A community-based group representing 22 agencies working together to identify and meet the needs of special needs adults with special emphasis on secondary and post-secondary education skill development and job placement

1991 – 1997 Trustee, Sault Ste. Marie Roman Catholic Separate School Board

1993 Volunteer – Memorial Cup event

1995 Received the Government of Ontario Community Action Award for Volunteer Contribution to the Province. Presented by the Ministry of Citizenship by Hon. Henry Jackman, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario

1998 Chair of "Achievers" Awards Dinner during Homecoming, an extremely successful event at the Armories paying tribute to the many successful persons from Sault Ste. Marie.

2002 – Present Chair of Gala Dinners which have raised $386,000 over the past two years for Sault Area hospital Foundation for Cancer Care.

For the last number of years Catherine has been involved in the Theatre in Sault Ste. Marie participating in Sault Theatre Workshop, Quonta and Pull-Chain Theatre productions. Catherine also volunteers at Sault Area Hospital.

Catherine is married to George and they have 5 children and 4 grandchildren.
