The owner of The Canuck is speaking out publicly after SooToday reported on the Sault Blues Society cancelling future events at the establishment due to health and safety reasons.

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario is also investigating a complaint against The Canuck amid accusations that public health regulations were being ignored.

SooToday and other local media outlets received the following statement from The Canuck’s owner, Jim Brogno, late Thursday afternoon:

“Due to all of the misinformation that has been said about The Canuck and threats to my life and my business, I feel that this is an appropriate time to make a statement. I am for freedom of choice,” said Brogno. “As far the business goes, we are following the Algoma Public Health mandate to its fullest. Here at The Canuck we take the health and safety of our staff and customers very seriously.

“We have been a popular place to eat and drink in the community for over 40 years in the community and would like to continue the tradition and we look forward to seeing all of our loyal customers back at the bar. Cheers and be safe!”

Algoma Public Health wouldn't confirm with SooToday if it was conducting its own investigation.

Brogno has declined to comment further.
