Canadian Army training happening near Thessalon this weekend

Those living around Thessalon may hear shots fired this weekend as the Local Canadian Army unit 49th (Sault Ste Marie) Field Regimen conducts a winter survival and preparedness training exercise. 

FROZEN TIGER will take place from Jan. 31 - Feb. 2. 

Members of the public may see an increase in military traffic, as well as soldiers with unloaded service rifles and military vehicles travelling on major roadways in and east of the city, especially in the Shaw Road area.

Local Canadian Army unit 49th (Sault Ste Marie) Field Regiment, RCA will conduct Exercise FROZEN TIGER, which will focus on winter survival and preparedness training in the Thessalon area east of Sault Ste Marie over the weekend of Jan. 31 to Feb. 2, 2025.

An increase in military vehicle traffic may be noticed while the unit transports personnel, equipment and food resources. Members of the public may see soldiers with unloaded service rifles and military vehicles travelling on major roadways in and east of the city, especially in the Shaw Road area.

The training event will take place on private property near Thessalon under an official Land Use Agreement with the support of local authorities.

All measures are being taken to ensure minimum inconvenience in these areas during the exercise dates. Members of the public are asked to take extra caution when approaching military vehicles and are thanked in advance for their understanding and co-operation.
