Canstruction is a global non-profit which hosts competitions where awe-inspiring structures are created entirely out of canned food. Pictured in a file photo is a recreation of the CN Tower and Rogers Centre, with the retractable roof made of tea bags.

The Station Mall, in partnership with the Algoma Food Security Network, is presenting the first annual Canstruction Competition, which they say is a "creative and impactful event" dedicated to fighting hunger in our community.

Canstruction is a global anti-hunger initiative that began in 1992 through the Society for Design Administration, an affiliate of the American Institute of Architects, the mall said in a news release.

The event challenges teams of 10-12 individuals from local businesses and community organizations to collect canned goods and other non-perishable items and use them to build sculptures.

Once judged with prizes awarded, their creative masterpieces will be on display in Station Mall.

"Canstruction offers businesses and organizations a platform to gain exposure and enhance their community image while fostering team building and supporting food security in Sault Ste. Marie," the mall said.

Food collected during the event will be donated to the Algoma Food Security Network, benefiting key organizations including Harvest Algoma, Niigaaniin, Salvation Army, Soup Kitchen Community Centre, and St. Vincent’s Place.

The mall said these organizations serve thousands of individuals and support more than 50 non-profit agencies across the Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma region.

“We are thrilled to bring Canstruction back to Sault Ste. Marie,” said Lynne Fabbro, guest services administrator. “This is an amazing opportunity for our community to come together, showcase creativity, and make a significant impact on food insecurity in our region.”
