The Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre has started registration for new summer camps over three weeks.
Each camp will develop participants’ understanding of bushplane and forest fire management topics through crafts, experiments, physical activities and guest speakers. Camps are designed for children ranging from five to 10 years.
“The Bushplane is a community hub that brings people together. Our new summer camps and sky explorers theme days give families fun, social and educational opportunities to experiment, learn and discover,” says Jasmine Agnew, programming co-ordinator the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre.
In addition, Sunday’s sky explorers program is launching four weeks of STEM learning beginning April 23. Each week explores a different facet of STEM:
- Science - April 23 – Celebrate Earth Day and make a trade at the Northern Nature Trade. Make your own fossil craft. Enjoy additional nature-themed activities with Science North.
- Technology – April 30 - Maker North will join us for a 3D dragon print demonstration. Learn about binary coding and make your own “Secret Message” bracelet. There is a showing of “How to Train your Dragon” 1-3 p.m. (bring a cushion and the canteen will be open!).
- Engineering – May 7 - Thrive Tours will teach us about Indigenous Ingenuity and Engineering and how it has and continues to influence our world as we know it today. Kids will create their own engineering project. Science North will help you build your own bridge.
- Math – May 14 – Get silly with math with fun large-format math games such as Addition Twister. Kids will then have a chance to create their own math game. We will be joined again by Science North for some coding fun.
All STEM days run from 12-3 p.m. and cost $5 per person. There is no charge for members.

Summer Camp Descriptions:
All About Planes – July 4-7
There’s no better place than the Bushplane Museum to get up close and personal with planes and how they fly. Discover what it takes to become a pilot and get your first pilot “rating”. Kids will learn about flight through a variety of crafts, media, guest speakers, physical activities and more.
Forest Fire Prevention – July 24-28
As the climate changes, it’s becoming more and more important to understand forest fire prevention. Learn about the three properties of fire, how to prevent fires and what professionals do to manage and extinguish them. Meet real fire fighters and explore a real fire truck. Play with water with a day of sprinklers, water fights and discovery. Discover the physical and mental skills required to be a real fire fighter. Kids will learn about fire and forest fire prevention through a variety of crafts, media, guest speakers, physical activities and more.
Bugs and Invasive Species – Aug. 14-18
A major contributor to forest fires in Canada are invasive species that affect our eco-systems. Discover the invasive species in our area and what scientists are doing to manage them. Get up-close and personal with a variety of insects and learn about their miniature but impactful world. Plant a mini pollinator garden. Kids will learn about bugs and invasive species through a variety of crafts, media, guest speakers, physical activities and more.
