'Branches in time' marks 125th year of Canadian Forest Service

Now's your chance to learn all about our forests as the 125th anniversary of the Canadian Forest Service is celebrated in the Sault this week.

Scientists and other experts at the Great Lakes Forestry Centre are inviting everyone to mark the milestone at their “Branches of Time” event.

The event takes place from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17 at the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre at 50 Pim St.

"The evening includes fun for the whole family, the opportunity to learn more about the unique history of the Canadian Forest Service, and the exciting work taking place at the Great Lakes Forestry Centre which focuses on forest pests, climate change, forest fires, and forest ecosystems – all to better understand our Canadian forests," Natural Resources Canada said in a release.

"Whether you are interested in education, entertainment, or celebrating the rich history of the Canadian Forest Service, this event promises something for everyone."  

Event highlights include: 

  • Entomica Insectarium: Live insects to discover  
  • Interactive science activities: Hands-on science fun with leaf and seed matching, a spruce budworm scavenger hunt, pipette challenge, and an insect show 
  • Science Mini Lectures: 10 GLFC scientists sharing bite-sized talks covering fascinating topics from insects to fire safety 
  • Entertainment: Enjoy some live music by local band TurboDad, along with crafts, trivia, and face painting for the kids 
  • Refreshments: Light food and drinks will be available, along with a cash bar 

Admission to this educational evening is by donation of cash or a canned good item to the United Way Sault Ste Marie & Algoma District.
