Ward Two Councillor Brady Irwin announced tonight that he won't seek re-election in the November 10 municipal race.

"I have lots of goals. I want to be a soccer coach," Irwin tells SooToday.com.

With the arrival of his third child in April, Irwin says he wants to spend more time with his family.

He and wife Martha have two other children, aged four and six.

"If I don't slow down and spend some time with them, this time will be gone before I know."

Could return to politics

Irwin was raised on politics, and he doesn't rule out a return to the arena someday.

His father is Ron Irwin, former mayor of Sault Ste. Marie and federal cabinet minister.

Since his retirement in 1997, Ron Irwin has served as personal advisor to Prime Minister Chrétien, Ambassador to Ireland and is currently Canada’s Consul General in New England.

"I'm stepping aside for a time," the younger Irwin said tonight.

"I'm sure I'll be able to serve the community in other ways.

"I haven't ruled out going back into politics. I've talked politics at the dinner table for most of my life.

"I could go back to City Council or the school board. And I've always been a fairly active Liberal. I'll continue to campaign for candidates."
