All welcome to launch for vol. 2 of border crossing
SAULT STE. MARIE, MI – Faculty, staff and students associated with Lake Superior State University’s international literary and arts journal, Border Crossing, invited the community to a launch party for its second issue at 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 8, at Bayliss Public Library in Sault Ste. Marie, MI.
Select contributors to the journal will be reading their work that evening, and copies will be available for purchase.
Border Crossing seeks to publish the best work submitted by emerging and established writers on both sides of the American and Canadian border with the goal of supporting literacy and the literary arts in the sister cities of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Ontario.
Visual art is only considered from residents of Michigan's Upper Peninsula or Ontario in order to provide an outlet where area artists may publish their work
“We like writing that crosses boundaries in genre or geography and voices that aren't often heard in mainstream publications,” says Prof. Mary McMyne, who serves on the faculty editorial staff. “The best way to see what we mean by this is to order a copy of our latest issue. The second issue, which will be for sale at the launch party, features the work of some amazing local writers and artists, including a couple of LSSU students, alongside that of national and international writers.”
Border Crossing is a product of the creative writing program in the LSSU English Department.
Professors Julie Barbour and McMyne supervised the editing of the second issue, with Barbour, a poet, working with student poetry interns, and McMyne, who writes fiction, working with student fiction interns.
The publication is a “teaching journal,” in that one of its main goals is to create editing and publishing opportunities for LSSU English and creative writing students prior to graduation.
For the third issue, slated for publication in fall 2013, Prof. Jillena Rose, a co-founder of the publication who stepped down in 2012 to focus on outreach for the LSSU creative writing program, will return to co-edit nonfiction with McMyne.
Barbour and McMyne will continue to select art and work with professional artists to coordinate the cover art contest.
Border Crossing is currently accepting submissions via “submishmash” through December 15.
The staff will soon open a contest to select visual artwork for the 2013 cover, which will again be limited to artists residing in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula or Ontario.
