With spring in the air and snow melting around the city, bears are beginning to appear around the city.

After responding to a report of an adult bear and two cubs on Wednesday evening, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service issued some tips on staying safe as bears continue to come out of hibernation.

Among the tips are:

  • Keep your property clear of garbage, ripe berries and other food sources that may attract a bear
  • When using a barbecue, make sure to clean it on a regular basis
  • Do not leave pet food outdoors or in screened-in areas or porches

If a bear does pose a threat, call 911 for police assistance and if you notice a nuisance bear, such as one going through garbage cans, sheds, and/or bird feeders, contact the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) at 1-866-514-2327.
