Members and non-members enjoyed a day of golf and celebration as the Sault’s Root River Golf Club officially marked its 75th anniversary Sunday.
The day’s festivities included a shootout, in which any participating golfer, with a combination of great skill and a little bit of good fortune, could win $10,000 for getting a hole in one (with a lower cash prize for whoever came closest to the hole if no one got an ace).
In addition, those with the highest number of points in a drive, chip and putt challenge (open to all ages) qualified for prizes at the end of the day.
“Today’s been just one of the events we’ve been putting on all summer, but this is the main celebration we planned,” said Rob Barsanti, one of Barsanti’s Restaurant and Root River Golf Club managers, speaking to SooToday.
“The weather’s been great and it’s nice to see familiar faces and other people who aren’t members of the club to come out and celebrate. 75 years is a tremendous accomplishment for our family and we just wanted to share with the community in celebrating it.”
Barsanti estimated between 300 to 400 golfers of all ages (mostly adults) would attend throughout the day.
While Barsanti’s Restaurant was closed for Sunday’s special occasion, a barbecue and beverages were available on the patio, including new ciders and wines from local vendor Thomson Strawberry Farm.
A full list of events lined up for the rest of the golf season, including tournaments open to club members and non-members alike, can be found on Root River Golf Club’s website
