Building on the success of last year’s event, Algoma University will once again host the annual Ontario University Athletics Wrestling Championships.
The event will take place on Feb. 8, at the George Leach Centre, promising another "exciting and memorable experience" for both athletes and spectators.
Competitors from top Ontario universities—including Brock, Western, Queen’s, York, TMU, Lakehead, Toronto, Carleton, McMaster, Guelph and Algoma University Thunderbirds—will showcase their athleticism in a day of fierce competition.
“When we were asked to host the OUA Wrestling Championships for a second consecutive year, we were excited to accept without hesitation,” said Jarret Miller, manager of Athletics and Recreation at Algoma University, in a news release.
“We look forward to bringing the same energy and excitement to campus this February.”
Algoma’s wrestling program had an outstanding 2024 season. In front of an enthusiastic home crowd, Kyle Price won gold in the competitive 90 kg weight class and was named Outstanding Male Wrestler, as voted by head coaches across the competition. Now an assistant coach for the Thunderbirds, Price’s leadership continues to inspire the team.
Lilah Fraser and Anthony Nighbor also reached the podium, earning bronze medals in the 72 kg and 83 kg weight classes, respectively. Their determination highlighted a strong season for Algoma’s wrestling teams. In 2024, the men’s team placed sixth out of 11 schools, while the women’s team secured an impressive fifth-place finish. Both teams are eager to climb even higher in the standings this season.
“The Algoma wrestling teams have had an outstanding season leading up to the OUA Championships, and we are extremely proud of their effort and results,” said head coach Trevor Manchester in the release.
“The women’s team has been ranked as high as sixth in U Sports, and the men’s team as high as seventh. Competing in front of a hometown crowd is a rare and special opportunity, and the team is incredibly grateful for the University’s continued support.”
For those unable to attend in person, the event will be live-streamed on OUAtv, courtesy of SaultSports, so fans won’t miss any of the action.
Community members are encouraged to attend and cheer on the athletes. Tickets are available today as of 10 a.m. and can be purchased here. Attendees are asked to have their invoice or receipt ready for entry.
