Algoma U to host annual Gathering at the Rapids Pow Wow

Dancers, drummers, and singers came together at the George Leach Centre for the 17th annual Gathering at the Rapids Pow Wow on Mar. 4, 2023.

Algoma University is once again hosting its annual Gathering at the Rapids Pow Wow on March 2 and 3.

The 18th annual event will take place in the George Leach Centre starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday and 12 p.m. on Sunday.

Admission and parking are free and all events are open to the public. Canned food donations for the Algoma University Students’ Union (AUSU) Food Pantry are encouraged.

Algoma University will host the 18th Gathering at the Rapids Pow Wow: Celebrating Life Long Learning on March 2 and 3.

The Shingwauk Anishinaabe Students’ Association (SASA), the Anishinaabe Academic Resource Centre (AARC), and Makwa Waakaa’igan at Algoma University in partnership with the greater Anishinaabe community welcome everyone to attend and participate in Anishinaabe culture, including Pow Wow drumming, singing, and competition dancing.

When:        Saturday, March 2 and Sunday, March 3, 2024

Time:         Saturday Grand Entry at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., Feast at 5 p.m.
                  Sunday Grand Entry at 12 p.m.

Marie campus continues to grow, and it is always an exciting time to celebrate Anishinaabe traditions and culture,” said Paul Sayers, Manager, Indigenous Community Relations, Training, and Development at Algoma University. “This vibrant event embodies the synergy between tradition and education, aligning seamlessly with Algoma University’s Special Mission of promoting cross-cultural understanding and inclusivity through higher education. We invite everyone to join us as we share in this celebration.”

Members of the public can enjoy Anishinaabe crafts and traditional food from vendors on-site at the GLC and The Speakeasy, both on Algoma University’s Sault Ste. Marie campus.
