Led by Emilie Vezina, an Algoma University Biology student, an Algoma University team has cycled more than 500 km in support of The Tanzania Education and Micro-Business Opportunity (TEMBO).

By surpassing their goal, Algoma U students, staff and faculty are celebrating TEMBO successfully sponsoring over 500 girls for secondary school education.

“I think it is important to remember how truly privileged we are to live in a place where girls have the opportunity to pursue any education they would like,” says Vezina, “Part of the Algoma University mission is to change lives and impact communities around the globe. Inspired by that, I want to help empower girls in Tanzania to get a high school education to help these girls reach their full potential. I want to thank everyone who participated in the fundraiser to help support Tanzanian girls on their education journey.”

Jane Omollo, Algoma University manager of equity, diversity and inclusion, praised Vezina’s efforts, and emphasized the importance of supporting access to education around the globe.

“Education is a fundamental human right, yet it is a huge privilege for many young girls in northern Tanzania,” said Omollo. “It is the beacon of hope, the key that unlocks endless opportunities. These girls will become architects of change, shaping their destinies and transforming their communities for years. The transformation of northern Tanzania begins with them. When you educate a girl, you educate a whole community and nation.”

TEMBO is an organization that helps send girls to secondary school in northern Tanzania. Each girl receives the necessary support and supplies to attend school. TEMBO also provides support for a mentorship program to help motivate the girls to study hard and stay in school.
