************************** Quality learning experience at smaller university attracts more students
SAULT STE. MARIE, ON - There are a lot more students at Algoma University these days.
One of Ontario’s smaller universities, Algoma U has seen increasing interest in it unique educational experience over the past few years.
“As expected, we’ve seen an increase in our student body,” said Dr. Richard Myers, president. “Our fall 2010 student population has grown by 10 percent over last year. We have also hired nine faculty members and have added some staff positions.”
The university was predicting a 10 percent increase in enrolment and the school is right on track, noted Dr. Myers.
The increase brings the total student body to about 1,252, including students studying at Algoma University at Brampton and a small number of students studying social work in Timmins.
Students from 16 other countries have arrived on campus, filling the residences and bringing a multicultural vitality to the school.
“We’ve seen a 14.3 percent increase in the number of first-year students from outside of Canada,” said Dr. Myers.
More local students registered this year, and there are increasing numbers of students arriving from across the province.
In addition, students from a number of First Nations are studying at Algoma U.
The university’s smaller class sizes allow professors and students to work closely together, creating a dynamic learning environment.
This creates a unique campus culture where students can be very successful.
Algoma University has reached another important benchmark: it now has 1,014 full-time-equivalent students, pushing the university over the 1,000 FTE benchmark.
This is an increase of 10.9 percent over last year in FTE students.
While many of its students are in fact studying part-time, the university calculates the full-time-equivalent by looking at the number of course registrations and assuming that all students take a full course load.
The Ontario government bases some of its funding decisions for universities on their full-time-equivalent student populations.
