NEWS RELEASE
ALGOMA POWER
********************
Algoma Power Inc. (API) had two severe weather events that occurred on Sunday, June 11, 2017.
The first storm occurred around 4:30 p.m. The storm lasted for about 45 minutes as it swept through, with local observers reporting winds speeds between 75-100 km/hr.
Observers also reported a temperature drop of 12-14 degrees Celsius in a matter of minutes as the cold front and severe weather moved through the region. A second thunderstorm cell swept through the same area later in the evening/overnight, at approximately 1 a.m.
The winds caused hundreds of trees to fall in the affected areas, resulting in numerous power outages. The main areas affected were east of Sault Ste. Marie, with the most severe damage occurring on St. Joseph Island, as well as in the Desbarats and Bruce Mines areas.
Over 6,000 customers were initially impacted due to a trip on the transmission system causing a loss of supply to API’s distribution system. Approximately half an hour later power was restored to 3,400 customers leaving 2,600 without power due to significant storm damage to API’s system.
API field crews and customers reported these storms left behind devastation that has not been seen for some time in our area. Trees were both on and tangled within the lines, there were downed wires, and broken poles. Access to enable restoration of power was compromised due to trees across roads and driveways.
All API customers have had their power restored with the exception of a handful of services that require repairs.
API crews with additional assistance from PUC Services, Wilderness Environmental Services, and Util-Assist Inc. dedicated long hours to safely and efficiently restore power to the customers of API.
API wishes to thank all of its employees and employees of PUC Services, Wilderness Environmental Services, and Util-Assist Inc. who worked diligently to get the power restored this week after destructive storms passed through our service territory this past weekend. Their dedication and commitment to the restoration efforts and their attentiveness to safety is greatly appreciated.
API also thanks its customers who, during a difficult time, remained patient and understanding while the restoration efforts occurred.
There is a possibility of cottage properties not having power at this time. Important: API wants to continue to remind the public to be cautious and aware that:
- Downed wires should always be considered energized or "live", and extremely dangerous.
- Do not approach or drive over a downed power line and do not touch anything the power line may be in contact with.
- If a downed power line falls on a vehicle, passengers should stay in the vehicle until help arrive.
- Parents are encouraged to talk to their children about the dangers associated with power lines.
