Beer and wine will be available at Sault Ste. Marie's new downtown plaza, and at the new Mill Market next door.
City council agreed tonight to add the new venues to a revised version of its alcohol risk management policy.
The two addresses will be treated as outdoor facilities, meaning that alcohol may only be served in separate licensed beer gardens.
The city will determine the location of the beer garden at each event.
It must be separated from other areas by a minimum 36-inch high separation.
Alcohol sales will be limited to beer, wine, and wine coolers, but low-alcohol and non-alcoholic beverages must also be available.
Hours of operation will be 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Sault Ste. Marie now has nine outdoor facilities approved to serve alcohol.
Here are the others:
- Clergue Park/John Rowswell Park
- North Street Field/Park
- Queen Elizabeth Park
- James Elliott Park
- Strathclair Sports Complex
- Roberta Bondar Park
- Ermatinger-Clergue National Historic Site
The city's revised alcohol policy, approved tonight, now allows extra-strength beer with an alcohol content greater than 5.6 per cent, and wine up to 14 per cent.
Recyclable cups are now mandatory.
In a separate matter, Mill Market announced today that it will change its name and logo when it moves to its new home at 73 Brock St.
It will be known as SOO MRKT Farmers' Market.
