Angela Zoellner won $79,462.50 in the Sault Area Hospital Foundation May 50/50 draw.

After her winning lottery ticket was drawn, Angela Zoellner was called with the good news.

And called.

And called.

And called, until she finally got the message on the weekend. She had won $79,462.50 in the Sault Area Hospital Foundation May 50/50 draw. Angela had been away without phone service when the Foundation team first tried to reach her.

Angela is a retired lab technologist who worked 40 years at Sault Area Hospital. She has been supporting the 50/50 since it started in November 2019.

“When I was working in the lab, I saw technology change so much," she said in a news release. "Every new piece of equipment was so important, and the only way we got it was thanks to community support through fundraisers – like the 50/50. There are so many behind-the-scenes areas that are so important to the hospital, like the lab. I always bought my tickets knowing how grateful I was for new equipment while I was working at SAH. I wanted to support the hospital – I never expected to win.”

Angela wasn’t the only winner with ties to Sault Area Hospital this month, as May’s Early Bird winner works in the Cancer Care Program at SAH. Shannon Pawelek of Sault Ste. Marie picked up $15,000 on May 17.

“Nobody understands the needs of our hospital better than those who work here, and we are grateful for their continued support,” said Teresa Martone, executive director for Sault Area Hospital Foundation. “This month, we had two winners with connections to providing care at SAH. Its so great to see SAH staff and retirees winning thanks to their support of the 50/50. And it’s not surprising – they know: every time you buy a ticket, you’re supporting care here in our community, and we’re so grateful for your support.”

Tickets for the June 50/50 draw are on sale now, and the early bird is coming up quick.
