Police have taken down the tape barrier around 127 Gore Street after an investigator from the Ontario Fire Marshal's office concluded at the scene yesterday.
Sault Ste. Marie Fire Prevention Officer Rocco Celetti says the investigation continues jointly with Sault Ste. Marie Police Services, local Fire Services and the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office.
The circumstances of the fire, which started at about 1:30 a.m. Monday, are now part of an ongoing criminal arson investigation.
Celetti says the fire was confined to one apartment in the building and there were no injuries reported, but because of its suspicious nature the Ontario Fire Marshal was called in to investigate.
The building is for sale and the main floor storefront appears to be vacant.
Police reported yesterday that there was extensive damage to the an attic after the flames spread from a second-floor apartment.
