While walking through the woods one day, SooToday.com happened upon a gentleman out for a stroll.

Somewhere alongside the Root River in Wishart Park was where we chanced to find Dave Walsh, a retired history teacher from Lakeway Collegiate and Vocational School.

He, like SooToday.com, was out to see if the fall colours had started.

And we're pleased to report that they have indeed begun.

Walsh, who now passes his time as the vice-president of the Sault Ste. Marie Ambassador Corps and in various community theatre productions, said that the colour timing this year could not be better.

"I remember when the MV Columbus cruise ship came by in the middle of October one year with a boatload of people looking for colour," he said.

"There was not a leaf on the trees because they had all been rained and blown off."

Walsh said he expects tourists planning a trip up north to take in the colours will not be disappointed this year if the come to the Sault area.
