A loud "boom" from Algoma Steel that was heard across town earlier this morning was the result of slag coming into contact with moisture, the plant says.
Laura Devoni, Algoma Steel’s director of strategy, corporate affairs and sustainability, confirmed to SooToday there were no injuries following the incident at Algoma's basic oxygen steel production (BOSP) facility shortly before noon.
“An incident occurred in our Steelmaking facility where slag came into contact with moisture causing a release of steam with slag," she said. "No one was hurt.”
Residents took to social media following the noise and uploaded pictures of heavy smoke at the plant.
SooToday spoke with several locals in Jamestown who said the houses in their neighbourhood shook as a result of the incident, followed by an abnormal smell in the air.
