VIDEO: Some crime stories are hard to explain in a headline

It all began when two men parked their bicycles outside Village Media's downtown headquarters on Tuesday afternoon

Never a dull moment in downtown Sault Ste. Marie.

At around 3:40 p.m. today, two men parked their bicycles in front of Village Media’s Queen Street headquarters and rang the doorbell, hoping to speak to a reporter about a potential story idea.

Their visit turned out to be quite a story on its own.

While inside the lobby, an employee warned the men to keep an eye on their unlocked bikes because they might get stolen.

A few minutes later, that’s exactly what happened: a thief rode off on one of the bicycles.

The pair went back outside and phoned police to report the crime. When an officer showed up, he parked his cruiser outside the Bruce Street side entrance to our building — where things got even more interesting.

As the two men chatted with the cop, another police scene unfolded just a few meters away.

A plainclothes officer — in a totally unrelated event — pulled over a car on Bruce Street and arrested a person inside. It’s not clear what led to the arrest or if the person faces charges.

The story doesn’t end there. Around the corner on Queen Street, where the two men originally parked their bikes, another thief hopped on the second bicycle and rode away — right past the officer and the two men.

The pair took off on foot in hot pursuit, eventually catching up to the suspect outside Sun Kwong restaurant and recovering the second bike.

As of publication, the first bike is still missing.
