VIDEO: 'Every Syrian has his own chef inside'

Now Canadian citizens after immigrating to Canada eight years ago, Alaa his wife Heba and business partner Bassam have followed their dreams and opened up 'Syrian Table' at the downtown plaza

After eight years in Canada, Alaa Oughli and his wife Heba have finally attained full citizenship. Their dream? To open a restaurant featuring dishes from their native Syria.

"Every Syrian has his own chef inside," says Oughli who, along with his business partner Bassam Hamza, operates Syrian Table, located at 73 Brock Street.

Having originally envisioned a food truck, the pair decided to take a chance when space became available in one of the shipping containers at the the city's new downtown plaza.

Oughli had a long list of thank yous to the surrounding community for all the help the couple received while setting up the new business including the Sault Community Career Centre, the staff at Soo Market and many more.  

"The welcome to this community was so warm, we didn't even feel like we were in a different country," he said.
