In the summer of 2003, Sudburian Kate Maki made the bold decision to leave her comfortable job as a grade school teacher and set out to pursue a career in music.

With two records under her belt, this acclaimed singer will be bringing her unique songs (and a few guests) to the Downbeat Lounge on Friday, January 14th for a one-night only performance beginning at 10:30 pm.

Maki, a former teacher, turned out to be a major contender at last year's NXNE festival in Toronto with her take on the alt-country-rock genre. A natural storyteller, Maki songs are wrought with emotion creating a perfect balance for her dynamic stage humour.

Maki's first CD, Confusion Unlimited, afforded her the opportunity to regularly travel across the country and open for some of country's greatest artists. Developing a small following of fans along the way, Maki refined her skills as she prepared material for her second CD. The Sun Will Find Us defined Maki as an artist to watch out for, displaying the maturity found in the songwriting of Lucinda Williams and a sense melody worthy of The Byrds.

Kate Maki hits the stage at the Downbeat after 10:30 pm. For more information on Kate Maki, visit her website at www.katemaki.com.

The Downbeat Lounge is located at 740 Queen Street East (across from PUC). For more information on the Downbeat Lounge, click here.
