LSSU Dance Company presents Dancing Through History

SAULT STE. MARIE, M- - Dance students at Lake Superior State University will share their interpretation of the evolution of dance during their spring performance Dancing through History April 17-18 in the Arts Center auditorium.

Both nights' performances are at 7:30 p.m.

Sixty students from the Lake State Dance Company are participating in this year's program, according to dance instructor Deborah Choszczyk, and they will move from the beginning through dance today.

Open to personal interpretation, some of the dances are a reflection of dance as it was, and others are works that were inspired by the dance and movement of different cultures.

"Dance can take on forms of storytelling that express the thoughts and emotions of the dancers and may at times influence those observing," said Choszczyk. "Some cultures believe dance is as essential as the air they breathe and for others it is the way to worship."

"Dance plays an essential part in our lives, perhaps more than we sometimes realize, such as the tremendous influence the slave trade had on our very young but rich dance history in America," she added.

The dance troupe will also perform for Washington Elementary and Concord Academy students who will be visiting campus on April 17.

Ticket prices for Dancing through History are $7 for general admission, $5 for students with valid ID and seniors, and $3 for children under 12.

Tickets will be available at the door.
