Superior Heights hosts 2nd Relay for Life (14 photos)

Approximately 200 participants have raised over $30,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society

Three years after they hosted their first ever Relay for Life, Superior Heights students and staff were excited to get together again on the football field to welcome back the fundraiser.

Over 200 participants representing 26 teams will be walking around the track until 11 p.m. to honour those who have beaten, are currently battling, or have lost their fight to cancer.

Each team has come up with their own name and theme, and they’ve all set up tents just off to the side from the track to form a giant tent city.

In addition to doing laps, the school’s entertainment committee has prepared an entertaining lineup of activities, including yoga, karaoke and lip sync contests, air bands, flag football, spike ball, and a scavenger hunt.

At 7 p.m., a reception and ceremony will be held for the cancer survivors in attendance, and a luminary ceremony will follow soon after to honour those who continue to fight or are no longer with us.

Event organizer Shawna Wootton is beyond impressed with how well the school has come together to make this event even larger than their first one.

“This has been a great committee,” she says. “Everything has been student-led and directed. Our staff has also been amazing, and there’s no way I could have done this without the support of all of them. It really has been a team effort to make this happen.”

For the last six weeks, students and faculty have been raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society leading up to the big day.

After originally setting a $20,000 goal, Superior Heights has smashed it – raising over $32,000 as of Thursday morning.

A significant portion of those funds will stay right here in the community.
