Snow or no snow, the holiday season has arrived (10 photos)

The annual tree lighting ceremony during Thursday's Moonlight Magic event drew thousands

The holiday shopping season officially kicked off tonight as the Queenstown BIA hosted its annual Moonlight Magic event.

From 6 to 11 p.m., Queenstown merchants kept their shops open late as shoppers browsed, enjoyed activities and live entertainment, and sampled sweets during the Hot Chocolate Competition.

At 7 p.m., Mayor Christian Provenzano addressed thousands of guests gathered in front of the Court House to witness the tree lighting ceremony.

His hope, he said, is for the giant tree to become a symbol of celebration for every season.

“I fully expect to see red and white lights on this tree come Canada Day,” he said.

Following the tree lighting ceremony and Christmas carols from Mustang Sally, Santa Claus himself greeted fans as he made his way to the March Street stage for photos.
