SAULT STE. MARIE — The past 50 years in North America have evolved to depend on oil as our #1 resource.

We use it to get around, to produce our goods, to heat and cool our homes, and much more.

The end of cheap oil, the end of our lifestyles are daunting statements that are examined in the awakening documentary, The End of Suburbia.

Clean North's Youth Environment Program (YEP) is showing this mind-altering film, February 19, 2006 at Algoma University’s new Amphitheatre.

The film, sponsored by the Ontario Environment Network and the Trillium Foundation, starts at 2:15pm and is followed by a panel discussion on urban planning, alternative means of transportation and what the end of cheap oil means for our community.

Admission is free and chances to win door prizes will be available.

The End of Suburbia, a Canadian film directed by Toronto-based filmmaker Gregory Greene, triggers a number of questions, such as have we reached the peak of oil, what does this mean for our economy, and is it possible that our lifestyles of consumption are going to die out?

This documentary will slap you in the face leaving you shocked at your own existence and it is presumed that the crash from the end of cheap oil will be worse than the stock market crash in 1929.

"YEP is very excited to showcase this remarkable documentary and discuss how our community can prepare for its future without the endless supply of cheap oil," says Tara Lappage, YEP spokesperson. "Only an open mind is required for participation."

YEP is encouraging environmentally friendly means of transportation to the film where special, door prizes are available if you arrive by Sault Ste. Marie transit or by a non- motorized means.

YEP consists of youth ages 15-25 whose goal is to increase environmental awareness among the community and youth.
