From one giant brush stroke to multiple miniature studies of colour and form, local artist Paul Walde's latest exhibition is a microscopic vision on a grand scale.

Below the Surface combines paint, photography, projection and science to peek at the unseen world surrounding us.

The exhibition is on display at the Art Gallery of Algoma, 10 East Street until October 13, 2007.

The Gallery is open year round, Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Artists Statement

In past projects, I have examined “non-artistic” evidential markings, materials and images from nature.

Much of my work has documented, interpreted, imagined and represented this information, creating a dialogue between cultivated and organic forms.

A subtext to this investigation has been the exploration of painting as a material, history, object, and form in regard to these qualities.

Current projects and interests have moved beyond evidential information that is readily apparent or visible, and now explores information that is present, but in many cases hidden, fleeting, or otherwise inaccessible to the naked eye.

Working in this way allows me to access new visual information that has conceptually enriched my work.

Engaging such technologies as microscopy, seismography, and functional magnetic resonance imaging, I am now able to see below the surface - looking into the landscape, brushstroke, and the mind of the artist, while using “artistic” gestures to conceptually frame and reveal this new information.
