Obie Trice at the Grand

About 250 diehards gathered at the Grand Theatre last night to take in the hip hop showcase presented by Cabin Media

Tickets to see Obie Trice in Sault Ste. Marie on a Monday Night? = $20

When the crowd loses its marbles as Obie announces he’s bringing Dr. Dre on stage to perform only to admit he was just screwing with it? = Priceless

“Twenty dollars to see Obie and Dr. Dre?!” he laughed, mocking the audience. “Dre’s a billionaire. He ain’t coming here.”

About 250 diehards gathered at the Grand Theatre last night to take in the hip hop showcase presented by Cabin Media.

Touring in support of his August 2015 full-length album, The Hangover, Obie told SooToday that the release is the fourth and final in the line of booze-inspired recordings after Cheers in 2003, Second Round’s On Me in 2006, and Bottoms Up in 2012.

While the theme was purely coincidental, Obie admitted to enjoying the spirits now and again, specifically vodka and cranberry.

In typical Detroit DIY fashion, Obie plans to repackage all four spiritual releases with unseen footage of he and a number of notable rap artists - including Eminem, 50 Cent, Proof and others - and bottle it all up with a new record for the ultimate Obie collection.

He expects the collection to be ready later this year.

“Detroit really doesn’t have an industry as far as music goes… but we’ve got a lot of guys getting into the music business now,” Obie told us prior to going on stage. “Hopefully it will continue on that way and we can have some type of industry there like Atlanta has industry for hip hop music. That’s what we’re trying to reach for.”

Last evening's opening performances included those from local artists Mikey T, Jay-R, Sonny Vibes, and TG Savage, as well as Double Up from Toronto and Son of Mary.

Look for interview and concert footage of Obie Trice at the Grand Theatre to be featured in an upcoming episode of Tuned on LOCAL2.
